The news in local ‘newspapers' has all but disappeared. All that remains is the paper.

Ok so they are not really dead, the legends of the newspaper industry will survive. Icons such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times will be with us for many many years to come. There will always be a market for news-gathering and world-class journalism.

But print will not be the delivery system. The news will be dispatched digitally. Though many publishing houses are playing with web-based delivery systems, mobile will prove to be the ultimate solution.

Newsprint is expensive. The production and delivery costs are absurd, while the business model is definitely ‘not-green’.

A few decades ago, every major N. A. city had at least one major daily newspaper. These cities also had a massive baroque railroad station. They were the trappings of the day, symbols of success and status.

The railroad stations are long gone, most demolished with only a few of these ‘temples’ having survived.

News today is consumed via the TV and Internet. Local news is hardly newsworthy:

Moose wanders down main street

Battling Beavers baseball team wins regional title

Stray dog alludes SPCA

The news in local ‘newspapers’ has all but disappeared. All that remains is the paper.

The primary business model of many local newspapers has become the delivery of printed discount coupons. To save cost, many are poly-bagged and flung from passing cars, lucky if they land in your driveway. So-called readers either drop them straight into the garbage or flip through them spending mere minutes to ‘read the news’. Few even have the patience to ‘clip’ the coupons.

Mobile is a far more cost effective way of delivering coupons … and definitely a more green solution.

Smartphones are with us 24/7. Users will break off a face-to face conversation to answer a tweet. Social interactivity, text messaging, tweets, SMS, all of these messaging platforms are extremely seductive and very intrusive.

Retailers have seen the future and it is mobile coupons.

Still on the outside looking in? Contact us and we’ll provide you with a enterprise coupon solution.

UROapp is the first in a series of 11 medical iPhone and Blackberry apps developed by mobile industry leader Mobile Fringe

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Aug. 5, 2010) – Mobile Fringe in conjunction with, MDapps.ca is proud to announce UROapp, providing secure 24/7 communication between urologists. This closed forum, private mobile network enables Doctors to confer with each other, obtaining instant peer-to-peer advice, while accessing research data and input from the medical community. UROapp will come on stream September of 2010.

It also heralds the launch of an all-new platform of private social networking apps aimed at vertical groups and industries – Steve Sorge Mobile Fringe CEO

These apps introduce a lean and technologically savvy way of inter-connecting the Canadian medical profession 24/7. MDapps facilitate better medicine and better business.

“UROapp, and the other ten medical apps, represent a unique private mobile social network for professionals.” said Steve Sorge CEO, Mobile Fringe. “By leveraging our mobile technology, mobile content management and best practices in social networking, our proprietary private platform allows all manner of vertical communities to interact on their iPhones and Blackberry’s effortlessly.”

Learn More about Private Mobile Social Networks

Smartphones, particularly the iPhone and Blackberry have all but replaced the laptop. These mobile devices are pocket-sized computers with ever-increasing capability and 24-hour functionality.

Mobile Fringe has developed this closed forum architecture that enables vertical industries, corporations and associations to create a secure private network that facilitates communication between head office and the field, between co-workers internationally and even between suppliers.

This private social network platform can radically reduce costs, increase efficiency and will have a major impact upon the corporate communication process.

Sorge added, “To communicate effectively, you have to minimize distractions. Some mobile apps have a steep learning curve. They can be complicated and difficult to learn, even intimidating. Simplicity in an app brings comfort and removes distractions. And this is what we achieve with UROapp.”

MDapps.ca will be exclusively marketed by Urologi Inc. According to Kari McAllindon, Urologi Inc. President, “Given the rapid adoption of smartphone technology within the medical profession, we are convinced UROapp will be quickly adopted by the urology community. Likewise, we are confident that we have achieved the right balance between respecting the privacy of the physician, while allowing other medical community members to participate 24/7 in secure and private discussions.”

Imagine a Wiki site that is secure, that is populated by those with similar business interests as you … a site that you can visit, download current data, even confer with others in your profession or company with security and privacy.

Mobile phones have assumed a central place in our lives. Some of us carry them every waking hour. Many of us have them on the bedside table as an alarm clock.

Thousands walk the downtown streets with heads bowed totally focused on their phones. TV reporters refer to their mobile device reading quotes from the phone rather than the traditional spiral bound notepad.

Instant access is good. So too is privacy and the ability to control what you want to hear and see.

For every valuable email or Tweet there is a steady barrage of junk.

The idea of social networking via the mobile phone has huge appeal. Imagine a Wiki site that is secure, that is populated by those with similar business interests as you … a site that you can visit, download current data, even confer with others in your profession or company with security and privacy.

Mobile Fringe has developed ‘Mobile Social Networks for Professionals’.

The foundation is a simple series of building blocks:

Private access through password and PIN

A central focus, i.e. a vertical industry or profession

Secure access 24/7

Ability to confer with peers: speed dialing, one-touch email, Twitter

Instant to access current corporate information and data

Instant to access data supplied by 3rd parties without having them ‘hound’ you

Access to training programs

The first Mobile Fringe app based upon the concept of ‘Mobile Social Networks for Professionals’ is UROapp:

UROapp provides secure 24/7 communication between urologists. This closed forum, private mobile network enables Doctors to refer to with each other, obtaining instant peer-to-peer advice, while accessing research data and input from the medical community. UROapp will come on stream September of 2010.

Logical candidates for ‘Mobile Social Networks for Professionals’ include:

Franchise networks with national or international distribution

Vertical professions and industries

Educational facilities

Political organizations

Fund raising groups

Mobile Fringe has developed a closed forum architecture that enables vertical industries and corporations access to a secure a private network that facilitates communication between head office and the field, between co-workers national and international, discussions with customers and even networking with suppliers.

This unique closed forum social network for professionals can radically reduce costs, increase efficiency and will have a major impact upon the corporate communication process.

Today, clients come to us expecting enterprise solutions. They know what they want and they expect Mobile Fringe to deliver.

Much has happened in the two short years following the App Store’s launch in July of ’08.

5 billion iPhone apps downloads and counting

250,000 apps now listed in the Apple App Store

75,000 Android apps listed in Android Market

3 million iPhone 4’s sold in only 3 weeks (the original iPhone sold 6 million in 15 months)

What has also changed during these two years is the mindset of the client.

When Mobile Fringe first opened its doors, prospective clients wanted to learn more about mobile apps. It was all new to them:

How many smartphones are being sold?

Which brand has leadership?

What are the trends?

Which platform will prevail?

What is the penetration for various platforms?

Which age group dominates?

Today, the demand from clients is far different. Today clients know what they want. They understand mobile apps. They’ve read the tea leaves and realize it’s no longer a case of ‘when’ but ‘how soon’.

Today, clients come to us expecting enterprise solutions. They know what they want and they expect Mobile Fringe to deliver.

And we know what “Enterprise” means. It means working with core business systems … technologies that can be as diverse as business itself. It means working with Web Services, XML, JSON, API’s or direct database connections. ”Enterprise” also means security, which means working with http, token authentication or LDAP systems. Because security matters … and we know it.

All of this experience, along with a strong focus on mobile performance, provides the right combination for successful enterprise solution.’

Two years ago, we spent six months developing our m3 core engine. Simply stated, we wanted a platform that could handle data and enterprise issues.

m3 has enabled us to create apps for shopping malls, for conventions, even for carriers like Rogers Communications and brands like Puma. The heavy lifting has been done. m3 enables us to move faster, lowering our clients risk.

Today we are focused on unique enterprise solutions. An example is our latest app, called UROapp.

UROapp, provides secure 24/7 communication between urologists. This closed forum, private mobile network enables Doctors to confer with each other, obtaining instant peer-to-peer advice, while accessing research data and input from the medical community. UROapp will come on stream September of 2010.

Developed for both the iPhone and Blackberry platforms, UROapp, is the first in a series of 11 professional social networking applications targeting the medical profession. Theses apps facilitate better medicine and better business.

And the core functionality applies equally to:

Franchise networks with national or international distribution

Vertical professions and industries

Educational facilities

Political organizations

Fund raising groups

Perhaps you too need an enterprise mobile solution?

If so, you’ve come to the right place.

FaceTime will have a major impact on service, sales and healthcare.

Version 4 is generating a whole lot of buzz:

1.7 million sold in three days

3 million sold to date

Limited availability

International orders pushed back until late July

It’s a classic case of demand outstripping supply.

Little wonder the demand is so high. Key features include a faster CPU, bigger battery, far better screen resolution, a vastly improved camera that also records HD video and of course, the much anticipated multitasking. All for $199 US.

A recent survey of those in line, waiting to be the first in their social group to get the iPhone 4, revealed that 77% were upgrading from previous iPhones. This is significant on a number of levels.

Obviously these people love their iPhone. No matter how much publicity the Android versions are generating, Apple fans are loyal. It also in yet another example of Apple expanding its eco-system. The Apple enterprise just keeps on growing. Churn is almost non-existent. The more iPhones sold, the more apps ultimately purchased. More people shopping Apple, leaves less for the competitors to fight over.

The big news, one that might open up all news vistas, which is typical of Apple, is FaceTime.

If you have ever had a video chat with someone, you know it can be a bit intimidating. Newbies keep looking at their own image, or have a problem looking into the lens. They glance nervously around the room, seemingly unable to ‘look you in the eye’. So video iChats may not be a big factor.

But FaceTime will likely have a major impact on service and sales. Can’t figure out what’s wrong with your computer or software? With FaceTime, turn your camera to the monitor and explain to the service rep what’s happening as you recreate the problem. Have a weird lump on your neck? Show the Doc. Selling your old lawnmower? Let the buyer take a look. Selling a car … well you get the idea.

And guess what? Apple will likely find a way to monetize this and add it to its ever-growing eco-system.

The Apple eco-system is totally integrated and follows a well defined and long-term Master Plan. Apple controls the hardware, the software and the distribution system.

Apple has dominated the music industry for years. It literally invented the mobile app industry. Now it’s poised to expropriate the gaming segment. Nintendo has expressed grave concern about the iPod touch competition and judging by Apple’s web site, it’s “Game on. And on. And on.”

What’s next on the list? It appears to be books, magazines, newspapers and video. Apple has launched iAd which definitely opens the door to having an strong influence within the advertising industry. It’s all integrated.

With the launch of iOS4, Apple has clearly defined two distinct operating systems: one for the traditional Macintosh computer, namely OSX and another for Apple’s ‘i’ devices: iPhone, iPod touch, iPod classic, shuffle, nano and of course the iPad.

iOS4 is based upon a touch interface. It’s a slimmed down system that doesn’t need the raw processing power required by a Mac Pro, or even the latest iMac. It doesn’t require a sophisticated cooling system. And it certainly doesn’t need the traditional keyboard. Cheaper to build, easier to use and definitely a format that is in great demand.

Sites that track Apple’s patent and copyright filings clearly indicate how aggressive Apple has been in terms of the touch interface.

iOS4 represents the future, OSX the past. Desktops gave way to laptops. Now the iPhone and iPad have assumed the lead.

There is a massive $1 billion data centre being built in Maiden, North Carolina. It’s big enough to handle all of Apple’s current distribution system, with capacity to spare. It’s even big enough for Apple to convert its recent purchase of Lala into a cloud-based distribution system where your music or video purchase remains in the data centre, not in a bloated hard drive housed in your “i” device. You access your purchase via ‘cloud computing’.

But wait. There’s more.

Steve Jobs has spoken often of the company’s hobby, ‘Apple TV’. It just sits there doing nothing. It simply doesn’t fit within the precise Apple strategy of integration and total control. Could it be that Jobs wants to do for television what Apple has done for music, mobile apps, gaming and shortly for publishing?

Apple Cable TV … but without the cable (iTV). Pay 99¢ for an episode of American Idol. Instantly available on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Mmmm.
